Times have changed, technologies have evolved, and the wintertime rush to laser hair removal treatment is soon to be a thing of the past. Many patients, in fact, have already made the switch to spring and summer hair removal treatments, which is a major boon for beachcombers looking to show off smooth, beautiful skin throughout the warmer months.
But isn’t having laser hair removal treatment around summertime more likely to cause skin issues? Thanks to Sciton BareitTM, this is no longer the case. At Radiant Skin, we’re proud to offer our patients this summer-friendly laser hair removal treatment. Read on to learn more about How Sciton BareitTM works, what the treatment process entails, and more.
Why Do Practitioners Discourage Laser Hair Removal In the Summer?
When it comes to conventional laser hair removal treatments, both pre- and post-treatment sun exposure can have deleterious effects on results, comfort, and even safety.
If you present to treatment with tanned skin, for example, the laser will have a more difficult time identifying and disabling the hair follicles. This is because laser hair removal treatment works by targeting the pigment, or melanin of the hair follicle. Pigment in the surrounding skin may “confuse” the laser in a sense, taking focus away from the follicles themselves.
On the other hand, patients who venture out into the sun soon after an otherwise successful laser hair removal procedure are more susceptible to sunburn, sun spots (hyperpigmentation), and other issues related to sun exposure. This is because the treatment increases the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
Finally, going out in the sun too soon after standard laser hair removal treatments increases the risk of various other complications, including irritation and skin discoloration.
What Makes Sciton BareitTM by Radiant Skin Different?
First, a basic overview: Sciton BareitTM is a highly customizable laser hair removal platform that works on a wide range of skin types, tones, and areas of the body. During a BareitTM treatment session, laser light is applied to target areas as the cooled applicator keeps the surface of the skin comfortable.
Available wavelengths include 810nm and a combined 810 / 940 / 1060 nm setting. Large spot sizes and high speed (up to 3 Hz) allow for effective treatment of both smaller and larger areas of the body.
While it’s still not recommended that Sciton BareitTM patients spend excessive amounts of time in the sun immediately following treatment, innovative “blend” technology (the combined wavelength setting) still allows for safe and effective summertime treatment.
This is because the blend setting protects the superficial skin layers more effectively than conventional laser hair removal treatments. This translates to less skin sensitivity, and lower risk of developing complications with brief periods of sun exposure. To reiterate, it’s still important that patients protect their skin and minimize sun exposure following Sciton BareitTM treatment, but thanks to the combined wavelength approach, they can do so more safely in the summertime.
Sciton BareitTM FAQ
How many sessions will I need?
While every patient’s optimal number of sessions can vary based on a wide number of individual factors, to provide a general range, the majority of patients benefit the most from three to six sessions.
Where on the body can I receive Sciton BareitTM treatment?
Thanks to the large spot size and treatment speed, Sciton BareitTM treatment can be applied to the face, back, chest, arms, and legs.
Does Sciton BareitTM treatment hurt?
Like most laser hair removal treatments, the sensation associated with Sciton BareitTM is likened to a snapping or mild stinging feeling. Also, the cooled applicator helps to alleviate any minor discomfort you would experience during the procedure.
Why is my hair growing back already?
This is actually an indication that the treatment was successful. Often referred to as “shedding” or “peppering,” when a hair follicle is successfully destroyed, it pushes the hair shaft out of the skin over the ensuing 1-2 weeks.
What Does the Sciton BareitTM Treatment Process Look Like?
The first step in the process is to come in for a consultation appointment. This will enable us to assess your skin type, hair growth, and other factors pertinent to your candidacy for this treatment. We will also ensure that you are medically eligible to undergo Sciton BareitTM.
When it’s time for the procedure itself, the area will be cleaned and prepared. Typically, no anesthesia is necessary. After customizing the parameters of the treatment to best accommodate your skin (among other factors), the practitioner will then begin the treatment.
The applicator will emit pulses of laser light into the treatment area, where it will target and damage hair follicles. Depending on the size and number of areas treated, typical session time can be as short as just a few minutes.
There is no formal recovery period following Sciton BareitTM treatment. However, there are still practices to follow (and avoid) after your treatment to ensure best results.
Preserve Your Results With These Post-Care Practices
Patients are typically recommended to use sunscreen after BareitTM treatment. Shaving after treatment is not discouraged, though more aggressive hair removal methods like waxing should not be used between sessions.
A feeling of intense warmth immediately following treatment is a common effect, and should resolve within 1-2 days at the most. Cold compresses and anti-inflammatory medications are typically recommended to mitigate these symptoms. The same goes for swelling.
Whether or not you notice any redness in the area, using gentle cleansers and avoiding pools, saunas, and hot tubs is important to avoid exacerbating the skin’s reaction to treatment. Always defer to your provider when navigating the pre- and post-care scenarios, as they will give personalized instructions.
