If you have started researching laser resurfacing, you have probably seen “ablative” and “fractional” described as opposites. Ablative usually gets labeled the aggressive option with weeks of recovery, while fractional is pitched as something you can fit into a long weekend. That comparison misses how these lasers actually work, and it can steer you toward the wrong treatment.
Laser resurfacing is one of the most requested aesthetic treatments, with more than 3.7 million skin resurfacing procedures performed in 2024, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. At Radiant Skin in Zionsville, Indiana, patients ask us about these two terms all the time. Understanding the two terms makes it much easier to know what to ask at your consultation.
What Is the Difference Between Ablative and Fractional Lasers?
These terms answer different questions. A single laser can be both ablative and fractional. Once you separate them, your laser options become much easier to compare.
Ablative vs. Non-Ablative: What the Laser Does to Your Skin
An ablative laser removes a precise layer of skin, after which fresh skin regenerates in its place. A non-ablative laser heats tissue below the surface to stimulate collagen while leaving the outer layer intact. Ablative treatments generally produce more dramatic change but require more recovery time.
Full-Field vs. Fractional: How Much of Your Skin Is Treated
A full-field laser treats every millimeter of the treatment area. A fractional laser treats thousands of microscopic columns and leaves the skin between them untouched. That untouched skin helps fractional treatments heal faster.
When you compare lasers, ask two questions: What does it remove, and how much of the surface does it touch?
How Does Recovery Compare?
If you have ever kept up a yard in central Indiana, you already understand the difference.
Full-field ablative resurfacing is a lot like tearing out tired sod and laying a fresh lawn. The change is dramatic, but nothing looks finished until the new layer takes root. After this type of treatment, new skin usually covers the area in 7 to 10 days, and full recovery takes at least a month.
Fractional resurfacing works more like core aeration. Tiny plugs are pulled across the yard while the healthy grass between them regrows. Your skin responds the same way. When researchers introduced fractional laser technology in 2004, they found the skin’s surface over each microscopic treatment zone repaired within 24 hours, with the surrounding intact tissue driving that recovery.
The tradeoff is that fractional results build over a series. According to Mayo Clinic, fractional treatments typically take two to four sessions for noticeable results. Many of our patients find a few short recoveries easier to plan around work and family than one long one.
Which Resurfacing Lasers Does Radiant Skin Offer?
Because Radiant Skin offers several Sciton resurfacing lasers, our providers can adjust both depth and pattern to your skin instead of fitting your plan to one device.
- Sciton TRL Full-Field Resurfacing: Ablative and full-field. It removes complete layers of damaged skin to a controlled depth for deeper wrinkles and acne scarring.
- Sciton MicroLaserPeel: Ablative and full-field at a shallow depth. It works like a precise laser peel for tone and fine lines, with a few days of peeling afterward.
- Sciton ProFractional: Ablative and fractional. It creates deep micro-channels to remodel scarring and texture while the untreated skin around them speeds healing.
- Sciton Moxi: Non-ablative and fractional. It is a gentle option for early sun damage and uneven tone.
- Sciton Halo: A hybrid fractional laser. It delivers an ablative 2940 nm wavelength and a non-ablative 1470 nm wavelength to the same microscopic zones in one treatment. Pairing it with BBL HEROic creates Halo Bright for added pigment correction.
Sciton’s ablative lasers use 2940 nm erbium light. A review in Plastic and Aesthetic Research found erbium is absorbed by water in the skin about 10 times more efficiently than CO2 laser light and leaves only 5 to 10 microns of residual heat damage. The result is cleaner tissue removal with less heat reaching the surrounding skin, which helps recovery go more smoothly.
Is Ablative Always Better Than Fractional?
A fully ablative treatment can deliver dramatic change in one visit, but that may be more than your skin needs, and the longer recovery can be hard to plan around. For many patients, a fractional or non-ablative series reaches the same goal with shorter, more manageable recoveries.
How Do You Choose the Right Resurfacing Laser?
Most patients come in focused on the result they want, but the downtime you can take matters just as much. During your consultation, your provider will weigh the depth your skin concern requires against the recovery your schedule allows, and choose the laser that fits both.
Start With Your Skin Concern
Etched wrinkles and pronounced acne scars usually call for ablative depth from TRL, ProFractional or Halo. Early sun spots and dull texture often respond well to Moxi or a MicroLaserPeel. If you would prefer collagen stimulation without laser energy, Lutronic Genius RF microneedling is another option.
Then Look at Your Calendar
Fall and winter are ideal for deeper ablative work in Indiana, since you spend less time in direct sun while your skin heals. Lighter lasers offer more flexibility year-round. Kayla Trammel, BSN, RN, founder of Radiant Skin, calls that flexibility one of the advancements she loves most about the field: “lasers being able to treat someone in the summer with Moxi safely or a ClearSilk.” Whichever laser you choose, a daily sunscreen that suits your skin will help protect your results.
